Jobs and Chores

Imagine a day, or the implications of twenty days, and make a list of the important things that need to be taken care of. We can then decide if these things will be a "job" or a "chore". A job is something that is one person's area of responsibility, like "video technician". A chore is something we all do, often in rotation, like washing the dishes.

Cooking lunch, cooking dinner, washing up, web entries, writing diaries, making material & grocery list, daily community program, webmaster, video technician, what music gets played, laundry, selecting what DVD to watch. (maria)

pelle 08.0307:

what about cleaning. If we have special job suits. Iwould love to be the cleaning guy!

(ward, 08.03.07) Well, it seems like we are beginning to find jobs for our talents. I am going to offer this preliminary list about things people have offered and suggested:

Alex: design and models, engineering

Doug: webcam and internet

Maria: clothing designs, supplies

Eva: supplies and planning

Pelle: maintenance

Ward: worrying, preparations

To this end, I will start new pages for the people who have actually started stuff, and I will put the stuff they sent me up there so you can all see how hard each other are working and know what's happening.

Pelle 08.03.07:

As the possible future maintenace-guy I would like to comment on the subject: laundry. If we only have a few (1 or 2) uniforms each + underwear, socks, t-shirts...x 5 (hmm could be a lot of washing).. any way, if we did our laundry by the hand, It would create an interesting problem to hang all the clothe inside flatland. I imagine its not allowed to hang clothe behind each other..? It would be really beautiful.....and annoying.

Doug 9.3.7:

Nice picture! you should be a painter! I can't wait to not be able to see it.

One job I have thought about but not mentioned is what I call "Outside Agent". This is a person who takes care of things for us outside of Flatland. In every piece I have done about isolated living, I discovered that the hosting venue, the museum or gallery, would not help with much of the simple things I needed once I was inside. Everyone already had jobs and were too busy.

I assume we will need "servicing". Things I mean are getting special things you need that you forgot, bringing in new supplies of perishables (I don't think we will have a large refridgerator) and laundry. (see OUTSIDE AGENT JOB below, starting 07.12.04)

Pelle, who is a tuff one, suggests we do our own laundry by hand, and I think that would be the coolest way, trying to be very self sufficiant. BUT: I also don't think there is a need to suffer more than we need too, so we have to make choices about what we want to do about thses things. There probably will be a lot of similar instances where the choice is between making the piece "stronger" or making our life "comfortable". Stronger sounds better in the first place, but if it makes us suffer and the piece break apart, people quit, then it might be the wrong choice. So I am going to identify some of these issues, and we can discuss them. Then I think we should come to decisions, and I have a plan for that borrowed from the Quaker people and it is called the Concensus Method. In this method opposing views don't have a vote and the majority wins, because that isolates the losers and we can't afford splits in our very close group. We have to all finally agree. So everyone has to finally SAY they agree, otherwise the pushy talkative ones (like me) will always get their way.

Not every subject needs the be governed by the Consensus Method, but in my imagination, anyone can state that they want the Consensus Method to apply to a question, and then it does. Many creative tasks would be hurt by this method, and hopefully no one will ask for the Consensus Method in those kinds of things. It can be very slow.

But, the first question we should perhaps use the Consensus Method on is whether we want to try to use the Consensus Method to solve some questions. So here we have to try to have everyone give an opinion. If this becomes a yes, or a near yes, I will start a page called Consensus Democracy and we will put all the questions there.

SO. Do we want to allow the Consensus Method style for some questions? Please answer below.

ward says yes, I think we should try it.

Maria 09.03.07

YES for the Consensus Method

doug 9.3.7

YES for the Consensus Method

- i think it's REALLY important that this be made public somehow.....

pelle 09.03.07

yes for CM, sounds good, ..

eva 10.03.07

yes, to the consensus Method

alex 12.03.07

sey yes sey

ward 20.03.07

So we will use the Consensus Method to make decisions whenever someone calls for it. this means everyone has to be paying attention to what's going on since everyone's vote will be necessary to move ahead. I had some CM issues to introduce but I don't remember them right now. What I will do is start a heading page called Consensus Needed and whenever someone wants to place a subject up for discussion and vote, it can be carried to there. So everytime you log on to Flatwiki, check the Consensus page to see if your vote is needed.

I think Eva said yes, she will head up our food supplying program, and MAria will help. Probably everyone will be willing to help, because we like to choose our food, and we are all helpful and friendly.
